When it comes to being a girl, I kind of suck at it: I don’t really know how to cook; I didn’t start learning how to dress until two years ago (my sense of style is still a work in progress); And when it comes to make-up, I am THE lost cause of lost causes. So you can imagine my ambivalence when I received a $25 Sephora gift card for Christmas. “Hmm, I suppose I could use this to buy myself some new make-up,” I thought while pondering over the present. As it turns out, I was definitely in need of some new make-up: After looking through the very little make-up I own, I realized that a lot of it was either running out or old. Like, so old I’m kind of embarrassed to admit how old it was. After the revelation that purchasing some new make-up for myself was necessary, I ventured out to Sephora for the very first* time.
Shortly after stepping into the store, I immediately felt overwhelmed for two reasons: 1) Bright lights everywhere and 2) Make-up, beauty products, and girly stuff everywhere. Make-up, beauty products, and girly stuff of all different shapes, sizes, and colors. I seriously felt like I was lost in a foreign country where all of the people who live there are girls who wear too much purple eyeshadow and have bleached their hair one too many times. And the language they speak in this country? Expensive, name brand products, like Benefit, Urban Decay, and Bare Escentuals. I felt so lost, I actually sought out a
translator salesperson to help me find what I needed at a relatively reasonable price.
I ended up finding the Sephora Collection where I was able to pick out some new eyeshadow, mascara, eyeliner, and a sharpener for said eyeliner. Even though I had found what I needed, I kept exploring the store to see what else they had out of curiosity. Did you know there is a such thing as a heated eyelash curler? And compact mirrors that have little lights inside of them? And cleansing wipes made especially for make-up brushes?! I didn’t. But I found it all to be somewhat intriguing: I never realized there were so many innovations out there in the World of Beauty, and I never realized how much effort girls put into getting glammed up.
Even though my first trip to Sephora was a confusing one, it was still successful because I found some much-needed, new make-up that I’m sure I will utilize. I also have to say that I enjoyed the trip and I can definitely see myself going back in the future. Who knows? Maybe this is the start of my learning more about beauty products and expanding my make-up collection. But no matter how into make-up I get, I can say for sure I will never be one of those girls who wears too much purple eyeshadow, has bleached blond hair, and owns a heated eyelash curler.
*Yes, I had never been to Sephora before. I’ve never been to M.A.C either. I told you I suck at being a girl.
