One of the reasons why I love Christmas is because I love giving people presents: I love picking out something that I just know (or sometimes hope) my friend/boyfriend/family member will love, wrapping it, attaching a card, and watching excitedly as they open their gift. However, as much as I would have loved to buy presents for everyone I know this year, that’s just not going to happen since I have to save for my trip to Thailand and for when I go home in three months and potentially face temporary unemployment. But that’s not the point. My point is: I still managed to pull some gifts together for some of my friends here in Korea for quite cheap!
One of my favorite inexpensive gifts to give are framed pictures. For one, I LOVE taking pictures, so I always have a ton to choose from. And second, this particular gift is much more personal, than say, a scented candle or lotion from Bath & Body Works.
In case you couldn’t tell from the pictures above, these gifts are for my Korean friends, which brings me to my next super-simple-and-cheap gift: mix CDs. My Korean friends are always telling me how they want to improve their English, so I made them each a set of mix CDs to listen to as a way to help them achieve this goal. I made sure the songs I picked weren’t too fast so they could actually hear and listen to the words. Also, I made sure to include a playlist so they can learn the names of the American/British artists on the CDs.
And for my last super-simple-and-cheap gift idea: personalized ornaments. I bought a box of red ball ornaments for 2,000 won ($2), a set of glitter pens for another 2,000 won, and went at it; I wrote my friends’ names (in Hangul), wrote “2011” on the bottom, and decorated the extra space with snowflakes. I’ve been making this particular ornament for the last 3-4 years, so I’m hoping to come up with a new ornament idea for next year.
And there you have it! I spent less than 5,000 won ($5) on each friend and I’m all ready for Christmas. If you’re on a budget and still in need of gift ideas, I hope this helps!
