In May, I started a contracted position with the American Cancer Society, and last Friday, it ended. This would explain why I’ve been MIA these last couple weeks, as I’ve been wrapping up my contracted position and actively applying/interviewing for various full-time, salaried, PERMANENT positions. I was hoping to start a new job the Monday after my previous job ended, but unfortunately, Big Kid Jobs take a while to get started. So now I’m playing the waiting game while enjoying my first time being “funemployed.”
I’ve never been unemployed before (I’ve worked almost every day since I was 16), so at first, the thought of being unemployed gave me anxiety. Once I realized I wasn’t going to have a job lined up right after my last job ended, I accepted that unemployment was imminent and decided to just enjoy having some time off while job searching simultaneously. My plans for my funemployment include working out daily, catching up on blogging, catching up on reading, and playing housewife (i.e. maintain the apartment and actually, you know, cook dinner for my husband). I wish I could go out of town or plan fun outings with my friends during this time, but it’s kind of hard since I won’t be getting a paycheck for a while.
As for my current potential job opportunities, I’ve interviewed for two different positions with the American Cancer Society: one phone interview and one in-person interview. Another potential job I’m interviewing for is one with a different non-profit. I feel that all of my recent interviews have gone pretty well, so now I’m just waiting for calls regarding second interviews or an actual job offer! In the meantime, I plan to keep applying for jobs, networking, focusing on professional development, and crossing my fingers that one of these jobs works out.
Have you ever been unemployed? Do you have any job-searching/interview tips to share?
