Happy new year, friends! How did you ring in 2016? I was sick last week, so Chris and I stayed home on NYE, ordered pizza, and watched Jessica Jones on Netflix. It was a relaxing, inexpensive way to spend new year’s eve and just what we needed after a crazy, stressful Christmas. I think even if I wasn’t sick, we still would have stayed home!
Now that 2016 is in full effect, of course I’m thinking about my goals for the year and what I want to accomplish. That’s just how this goal-oriented girl rolls! I’ve narrowed it down to two goals for the year, one small one and one big one. My small goal for 2016 is:
Complete my second round of Whole30 in January and finally reach my goal weight
I feel like doing a Whole30 is the perfect way to start out the new year and detox from the holidays. I’ve gained 9 pounds (!!!!!) since we moved in October, so I’m hoping to lose that all in January and then some. I now have to lose 14 pounds total to finally reach my goal weight, so if I combine some super clean eating with getting back into my running routine, I’m sure I can finally make this happen by spring.
I’m super excited for my second Whole30. I feel like it’ll be easier this time because I’ve done it before so I’ll know what to expect. I know the program rules by heart, I know how to read food ingredient labels, and I know how to cook more compliant recipes. Sure, the first week or two will be challenging because my body will be adjusting to life without sugar, dairy, grains, etc. again, but after that, things will be smooth sailing and I’ll be back on track with healthy living. I don’t think I’ll be posting weekly updates like I did during my first Whole30, but I’ll definitely post my results once my 30 days are over and maybe even a halfway point update.
My big goal for 2016 is:
Get serious about side hustling
Ever since I got my new job last summer, I’ve been struggling with the fact that I don’t make as much money as I did when I worked two jobs. My salary right now is entry-level; it works for a single twenty-something who just graduated from college and is renting an apartment, not a thirty-something who wants to buy a house and have a baby. Don’t get me wrong, I make enough to get my bills paid, but not enough to aggressively save for a down payment on a house and pay off the last of my debt.
Since I’ve started making less money, I’ve worked on cutting down on some of my monthly expenses: I ended my yoga studio membership ($100/mo), got rid of my student loan payment, and started a spending diet of only spending $100/mo on non-needs (eating out, shopping, etc). But what do you do when you run out of expenses to cut out? You start making more money! I’ve only been at my job for six months so I don’t qualify for a raise or promotion just yet, but what I can start doing right now is making more money on the side. To start making money quickly, I’ve been selling stuff I don’t want/need anymore on Craigslist and Ebay, but I eventually want to find a side hustle that can help me consistently bring in an extra $500+ a month. Some ideas I have for side hustling are: freelance work, baby sitting, pet sitting, house sitting, etc.
This is my big goal for 2016 because Chris and I want to buy a house in the next couple years, so we’re working on improving our credit scores and saving for a down payment. Side hustling is one of his goals for 2016, too, so we’ll definitely be keeping each other accountable with this goal and hopefully be able to buy a house by Fall 2017.
One last thing I want to do in 2016 is travel more. Chris and I barely traveled last year and that seriously upsets me because traveling is in my blood. Since we’re saving for a house, I doubt we’ll do any big trips like head to the east coast or out of the country, but we do plan to go to Seattle in March and to Carmel with Otis during the summer. I think staying local will keep things cheap but still be fun.
I’m looking forward to 2016. I think if I’m able to finally reach my weight loss goal, make more money, and get some traveling in, it will make for a really great year.
